Journeys Modern Dance Performance

March 7, 2020 7:00 pm @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Dancers and Abdiel Jacobsen (principal dancer for Martha Graham and Broadway performer) spent time at the Great Circle and Octagon earthworks in Newark. We walked around the space, felt the energy, and did some improvisational movement. We did some writing and talking, and then the dancers came back to the studio and spent the next five days working on choreography. The overall thematic element is that death brings forth new life, and that growth takes hold on the foundation of pain.

Notes for “Phoenix” (choreographed by Elizabeth Knecht):
*Phoenix symbolizes the journey from struggle/grief to freedom and flight. The piece has three movements – one represents being caught in grief/darkness/struggle, two represents the transition out of darkness, and three celebrates the joy of coming back into oneself after a dark period.

Those are the two original pieces from Oyo. We’ll have a spoken word artist, a Peruvian native drummer who will play live, and a piece from a guest dancer (Countess Winfrey of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company) to round out the show.
