Jerky’s Jamaican Grill Opens This Weekend

An authentic taste of Jamaica is coming to the edge of Short North and the University District. Jerky’s Jamaican Grill opens its doors at 1247 N. High St. on Friday, December 3 at 12 p.m.

Taking over the former home of Happy Little Treats after its move down the street, Jerky’s small square footage makes it a takeout and delivery only operation for now.

Owner Sanjiv Bacchas saw a need for authentic Jamaican cuisine in Columbus, and with its popularity, foot traffic, and vibrant late-night scene, the Short North area was the ideal place to bring it to the masses.

Jerky’s set-up also checks two boxes popular in the (sort of) post-pandemic food scene.

“There’s definitely a need for food on the go,” Bacchas says. Their Jamaican eats also offer more of a home-cooked meal type of feeling.

At the helm in the kitchen will be Chef McKenzie, a 20-year restaurant industry veteran from Kingston, Jamaica. Bacchas says McKenzie will implement the processes and techniques that will keep Jerky’s food authentic.

As the name implies, Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork will be the specialities. There will be sides like rice & peas and mac & cheese. Bacchas is also excited about the Jamaican Escovitch Fish – a fried fish dish topped with a spicy sauce and pickled veggies.

Jerky’s will be open for takeout, curbside pickup and delivery on platforms like DoorDash and Uber Eats.

After opening day, Jerky’s Jamaican Grill will be open from 11 a.m. – 12 a.m. daily.
