The Hilltop community is rising. It is one of the most diverse communities in all of Central Ohio. While it has its challenges, people from all backgrounds live together as neighbors and are doing amazing work to build a better community.
Unfortunately, some people have allowed hate and fear to drive their actions — an anonymous person has started a change.org petition calling on the City of Columbus to shut down the Wedgewood community, which has a large population of Somali Muslim immigrant and refugees. (https://www.change.org/p/city-of-columbus-shut-down-wedgewood-village-apartment-complex)
This petition has become an online ground for hundreds of people to spew hate against the Wedgewood community. Our Unity March is to trump their hate by showing love and support to the children and families in this apartment complex. We will march through the community to show that we support the MY Project USA’s young leaders of the Wedgewood Village working together to build a safer, healthier, more equitable community.
Join a growing community of people coming together to build a safer, healthier and stronger community on the Hilltop. Strong schools, jobs, opportunities and community supports make a safe neighborhood, not “othering” communities because they are different. Violence ends when we take community based approaches to reducing violence.
Bring a sign, a drum, or an instrument — lets show Wedgewood some love! We will step off from the corner of Georgesville and Sullivant at 2:30 pm and end at the Wedgewood Community Center around 3 pm for speeches, some music and drinks.
*** #WestSideBestSide is a growing movement of residents, community organizations, people of faith and youth organizing together in the Hilltop with the Columbus People’s Partership.***
