Continuing its commitment to screening a world cinema title every day of the year, the independent nonprofit Gateway Film Center Center reveals its maverick mix of programming for the month of August.

“This really is not new for the film center,” shared GFC President Chris Hamel. “World cinema has always been an important part of the program at GFC. This public commitment is about our investment and belief in the power of storytelling and presenting great films from around the globe that wouldn’t have a venue otherwise.”

This commitment to curate films made outside of the United States is made possible through partnerships with mission-driven organizations across the city and through further collaboration within the film industry. Initial partnering organizations include Columbus Council on World Affairs (CCWA), Greater Columbus Sister Cities International (GCSCI), and OSU’s Office of International Affairs.

“Our partnership with the Gateway Film Center exposes students to such a diverse selection of international films and provides them the opportunity to learn about the world from the perspective of a culture different from their own, which aligns perfectly with our mission as an office,” said Renee Bishai, Program Coordinator for Global Engagement at OSU’s Office of International Affairs. “Thanks to the incredible selection of works the Gateway Film Center offers, our collaborative events attract audiences from a variety of backgrounds, allowing us to engage with people from all aspects of the Ohio State community and beyond.”

Thanks to relationships developed over the years, Hamel will work with studios and distributors, national and international, to bring these titles to GFC. Hamel explains, “There are still a lot of American distribution companies that care about, and invest in, films being made outside of the U.S. As an independent cinema, we’re lucky to have relationships with some of them to help bring these films to Columbus.”

One can expect to consistently see titles from studios and distributors like Film Movement, Strand Releasing, Music Box Films, IFC Films, GKids, Oscilliscope Laboratories, A24, The Orchard, Roadside Attractions, and Magnolia Pictures. Gateway Film Center is excited by the opportunity this commitment presents to bring even more stories and perspectives to our community. With genres ranging from western to documentary to mystery, the month of August will bring Columbus exclusives:

Titles programmed in GFC’s World Cinema mix will all have different runs-of-engagement and have a variety of selected showtimes. All will be featured on the GFC website, under the World Cinema filter. Wherever possible, GFC’s world cinema commitment will include presenting renowned, festival-style programs like Tales of Europe, Young French Cinema, Canada Now, and Hola Mexico.

This August, GFC’s beloved western series, Double Barrel, returns to feature the entire “The Man With No Name” trilogy, including the Ohio premiere of the 4K restoration of A Fistful of Dollars. Additional world cinema exclusives include McQueen, a personal look at the extraordinary life, career, and artistry of British fashion designer Alexander McQueen; and the anime smash Cowboy Bebop: The Movie returns to the big screen with an all-new bonus companion piece.

In September, Young French Cinema will return to GFC, a program presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and UniFrance, to showcase rising French talents with a wide range of cultural influences and subject matter. All of the titles selected by GFC this year are from female directors.

Additional world cinema series on the horizon include Canada Now and Hola Mexico.

“Watching world cinema connects us to something bigger, and we believe, right now, that part of our program is especially important,” said Gateway President Chris Hamel. “Through our commitment to world cinema, our goal is to invite more people to explore movies from outside the U.S. and come together in support of filmmaking, filmmakers, and cultures around the world.”
