GATEWAY FILM CENTER PRESENTS “ARGENTO APRIL”

April 6, 2018 7:30 pm @ 7:30 pm - 11:59 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:30 pm on Friday, repeating indefinitely

Beginning April 6, the independent, nonprofit Gateway Film Center brings you four favorites from the Italian master of horror, Dario Argento, restored in glorious 4K for “Argento April.”

“From his keen ability to scare us through creative lighting to the beautiful ways he kills off all of his leading ladies, Argento’s ‘style over substance’ filmmaking approach has us simultaneously creeped out, horrified, and intrigued,” shared Gateway Film Center President Chris Hamel. “These 4K restorations will be clearer, brighter, and more faithful to the films as they were first created over 40 years ago.”

GFC’s month-long tribute to the maestro of the macabre features:

• APRIL 6 – THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (1970)

• APRIL 13 – THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS (1971)

• APRIL 20 – DEEP RED (1975)

• APRIL 27 – SUSPIRIA (1977)

In 1970, debut director Dario Argento indelibly redefined the “giallo” genre of murder mysteries with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, catapulting him to international stardom. With sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) and a seductive Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight) score, this landmark film never looked or sounded better.

The Cat o’ Nine Tails, the second entry in Argento’s “Animal Trilogy” found the young talent further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as master of the giallo. The term “giallo,” which translates literally to “yellow” but in Italy tends to mean simply “thriller” when talking about fiction, comes from the cheap, yellow-covered thriller novels published in Italy in the ’50s and ’60s.

Deep Red was Argento’s first full-fledged masterpiece, a riveting thriller whose secrets carefully unravel via a series of carefully calibrated compositions that become not unlike virtual gateways into Freudian pasts. Aided by a throbbing score from legendary proggers Goblin, this hallucinatory fever dream is punctuated by some of the most expert set pieces the genre has to offer.

A nightmare fairy tale etched in neon color, Argento’s witchy shocker Suspiria remains the most famous of all Italian horror movies. One of the scariest, goriest, and most gorgeous films ever made, Gateway Film Center was honored to present the recently discovered uncut 35mm print on its exclusive tour last summer. Not only is the 4K restoration of the film brighter and clearer than before, it completely changes the palette of certain scenes, revealing layers of color that weren’t visible before.

The Gateway Film Center regularly offers rare, essential, and influential movies presented in their original 35mm and 70mm formats as part of its celebrated FilMM series, as well as stunning 4K high-resolution restorations. Visit www.gatewayfilmcenter.org for full showtimes and ticket information.
