The nonprofit, independent Gateway Film Center announces the return of its beloved summer family film series, From Book to Film, where admission is free with a library card thanks to a partnership with Columbus Metropolitan Library. From May 25 – August 23, the series will feature a different movie inspired by a great book every week, all summer long.
As part of the film center’s ongoing efforts to improve the central Ohio community, From Book to Film’s mission is to encourage children to read while also providing an opportunity to watch these classic family films on the big screen. Upcoming titles in this series include:
· 5/25 – 5/31: MARY POPPINS (1964)
· 6/1 – 6/7: FANTASTIC MR FOX (2009)
· 6/8 – 6/14: JUMANJI (1995)
· 6/15 – 6/21: SHREK (2001)

“Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Summer Reading Challenge keeps kids reading during the summer to help prevent loss of critical skills learned during the school year,” said Patrick Losinski, CEO of the library. “We know that reading during the summer break results in better success in school, now and in the future. We value our partnership with Gateway Film Center and how their From Book to Film series provides another avenue for kids to remain engaged in reading and learning during the summer.”
The series will kick off on May 25 with the original Mary Poppins starring Julie Andrews as the beloved magical and musical nanny. This year will also feature From Book to Film crossovers with other GFC signature programming including Sensory Friendly Films (Shrek, The Iron Giant, How to Train Your Dragon) and Nina West Presents! (Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz).
“Gateway Film Center has a long tradition of uniting the community through accessible events and inclusive programming,” shared GFC President Chris Hamel. “From Book to Film aligns the film center with a great strategic partner (Columbus Metropolitan Library) and helps make the central Ohio community a better place to live.”
From Book to Film screenings occur daily at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is free (up to four) with your library card, along with entrance to the lobby reading station. Columbus Metropolitan Library’s 2018 Summer Reading Challenge kicks off June 2 and runs through August 4.
