Memorial Day

The Westerville Sunrise Rotary Club is set to host the 11th annual Field of Heroes this Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27). The event is held at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and County Line Road West in Westerville.

The centerpiece of the Field of Heroes is a breathtaking 100,000+ square foot field of 3,000 eight-foot tall American flags. The flags provide an opportunity for community members to honor their personal heroes – whoever they are… a family member, a veteran, a member of the armed services, a teacher, a police officer, firefighter, or any other person who has made an impact on others’ lives.

The 2019 Field of Heroes theme is Welcome Home, honoring both the brave men and women who have left their families to serve this country, and the families that remain behind to shoulder the responsibility to protect the home and maintain the sense of everyday life for their loved ones to return home to. We recognize that our heroes sacrifice is not made alone.

On Saturday afternoon the Field of Heroes is featuring I’ll Be Seeing You, a theatrical performance by the Westerville Library in partnership with the Westerville Historical Society, as well as a free concert by the Westerville Community Concert Band, followed by a performance of Echo Taps. You are welcome to bring a blanket and picnic basket for the concert, and they will be performing In The Presence of Heroes (commissioned from composer James Swearingen).
Back for the seventh year is the Field of Heroes 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, May 26th, presented by OhioHealth. The run/walk will draw 1,200+ participants (making it the largest race in Westerville), and will benefit the Marine Corps Family Support Community.

Other weekend events include a Sunday Memorial Ceremony featuring Major General Deborah Ashenhurst and USA Retired Denise Zieber Leach, as well as the Closing Ceremony on Monday, a flag retirement ceremony led by the Boy Scouts, and the nightly playing of “Taps” at sunset. Saturday, Sunday and Monday at noon, the name of each hero honored with a flag will be read as well.
All are invited to visit the Field of Heroes 24 hours a day, between 5:00 pm Friday, May 24 and 1:00 pm Monday, May 27 to join in remembering and honoring the community’s heroes and re-connecting with the true meaning of Memorial Day.
