Dan Gerdeman is an artist, experimental film maker, animator, and art educator whose work has a
lowbrow bent. Much of his art focuses on the way we treat each other. His work skewers the petty andheroic. It scrambles whimsy with savagery. It treads lightly between madness and sanity. Of his work, Gerdeman says, “It is the fragile skin we can see and blood and bones hidden from sight. It is a Mack truck
full of emotional, sexual, and social relationships thrown into a blender with a cupcake, a knife, a lemon, and a fart joke.” He is us.
One of eight children, Dan was raised in North Baltimore, Ohio, a town with a population of 3,000. Of his upbringing, he says, “My dad managed a grain elevator and my mom was the mother that every kid in the neighborhood wished was theirs.” He is married to artist/costume designer Judy Chesnut-Gerdeman and is the father of three children.
