earth day events in columbus

From April 13 to 20, thousands of central Ohio residents will work side-by-side to clean up and beautify neighborhoods, parks and natural areas as part of Earth Day Columbus, an annual volunteer effort organized by Green Columbus that culminates in the Earth Day Celebration downtown.

Throughout the week, dozens of service site hosts will organize tree plantings, litter pickups and educational events to clean and strengthen the green spaces in their communities. Gardening equipment, saplings and online volunteer recruitment tools will be provided free of charge through Green Columbus courtesy of Keep Columbus Beautiful with support from local partners.

This years’ service week will wrap with the city’s annual zero-waste Earth Day Celebration at Genoa Park (behind COSI) on Saturday, April 20, from noon to 8 p.m. with local bands, family-friendly activities, food trucks and more. The rain-or-shine event is free and open to the public.

In 2018, more than 5,700 volunteers collectively contributed more than 17,000 hours of their time to make Columbus greener and cleaner. “It’s been amazing to see the results of the efforts of so many central Ohio residents,” stated Erich Hiner, Green Columbus volunteer board member. “We know this year is going to be no exception, and Green Columbus is looking forward to supporting these amazing volunteers and celebrating with our community.”

This year, there are a variety of volunteer service opportunities for individual contributors and groups. Sites are hosted by individuals, community groups, schools or companies. Volunteers can see available opportunities and register to participate at EarthDayColumbus.org.

We are highlighting the following opportunities to media looking to produce b-roll or other multimedia content in support of 2019 Earth Day coverage. Additional volunteer sites are scheduled daily throughout the week.

● April 12 — Large Tree Planting Event (hosted by DHL Supply Chain): This large service site in Westerville, Ohio, will include over 70 volunteers from DHL Supply Chain as well as The Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University working together to plant 1,000 tree saplings. This year, DHL Supply Chain donated $17,600 to Green Columbus, providing a total of 6,000 trees to be planted at various service sites throughout the volunteer week.

● April 13 — Scioto River Cleanup (hosted by Sierra Club Central Ohio): As a community, it’s important to care for our river and keep it clean. Trash traveling downstream gets caught up on the riverbanks of the Scioto, littering our city and impacting wildlife. This cleanup day will be focused on litter removal from the river and river banks. Lunch will be provided by Falters Meats.

● April 17 — Earth Day Electronics Recycling Drive & Community Shred (hosted by Integrated Building Systems): Central Ohio community members are invited to bring unwanted (working or nonworking) electronics to the 7th annual Earth Day Electronics Recycling Drive to recycle them and prevent harmful elements from ending up in the environment. Up to five boxes of paper shredding per person will also be accepted. There will be a taco truck on site.

● April 18 — Fruit & Vegetable Planting at Urban Farm (hosted by Four Seasons City Farm): Volunteers will participate in garden preparation and plant fruit trees, berry bushes, strawberry plants and vegetable seedlings in the Four Seasons City Farm’s award-winning urban gardens on Mound Street. Volunteers will be sent home with strawberry and tomato plants.

● April 20 — Earth Day Celebration at Genoa Park (near COSI): For more information visit http://www.earthdaycolumbus.org/celebrations
