Brandt-Roberts Galleries is proud to present, The Obscured Landscape, a new body of work by Columbus-based artist Christopher Burk. Burk continues his investigation into the overlooked elements of the urban environment to provide opportunity for contemplation. Displaying his obsessive attention to detail and mastery of skill in many media, this solo exhibition features over 20 works in oil and gouache.

The Obscured Landscape plays upon the imagery of the “obscured” that occurs within the urban landscape. Continuing Burk’s interest in the nocturne, his carefully composed pieces occur primarily in the evening and focus on camouflage that occurs within the urban landscape. The featured obstructions have at times been intentionally created by the hand of man, while at other moments, they have been created by nature. The level of obstruction ranges from a slight hindrance to complete obliteration – a short privacy fence separates one home from the next, while towering foliage creates a complete barrier to a barren parking lot (a man-made eyesore). While elements of human activity exists, such as a light shining from a window or a trash can on the corner, the paintings absolve themselves from actually depicting people. Instead, the work records and reflects upon the transformation of the urban environment by people through their action with or against the natural environment.

Christopher Burk has received numerous awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a Vermont Studio Center Merit Grant, and an Artist in the Community Grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council. His solo exhibitions include Christopher Burk: Illuminating the Everyday at the Springfield Museum of Art, Ohio, and Christopher Burk: New York Images at George Billis Gallery in NYC. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center, Columbus; Schumacher Gallery, Bexley; OAC Riffe Gallery, Columbus; Bonfoey Gallery, Cleveland; George Billis Gallery, NYC; Robert Lange Studios, Charleston, SC; Prince Street Gallery, NYC.

The Obscured Landscape opens October 5, 2018 with a reception from 5:30-8:00 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through October 31st.
