Black Power in Comics Celebration 2019

Up, Up and Away! Grab your superhero cape and head to Black Power in Comics Celebration 2019 on Sat., Oct. 19 from 10 am to 4 pm. Meet African American comic book artists and writers whose work has filled the pages of Marvel, DC Comics, and other independent media. Learn how African Americans have used self-publishing and grassroots efforts to bring their creative visions to life. Vendors will be setup to sell comic books and other comic-themed items. You can also experience Behind the Mask: Black Power in Comics exhibit.

10 am Event begins/Vendor tables open
All day until 3 pm Artists and vendors will vote on Best Cosplay (comic character costumes) worn by visitors. Grand prize announced at 3:30

1:30 pm The Legacy of Marvels First Black artist Billy Graham panel discussion
Moderator- William Jones-is the founder of Afrofuturism Network, a historian, educator and self-described “comic book geek.” Guest of Honor -Shawnna Graham, granddaughter of Billy Graham. He is widely recognized as the first Black artist at Marvel Comics. In the 1970s, he worked on both Black Panther and Luke Cage. Recent film and TV adaptations borrowed from Graham’s art style but did not credit him. His granddaughter Shawnna is traveling across the country to educate the public about legacy of her grandfather.

3:30 pm Cosplay winner is announced
4 pm Event ends
