Bengali New Year Feast with Bidisha Nag

April 10, 2018 6:30 pm @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Bengali New Year begins in mid-April and is celebrated with new clothes and sumptuous feasts. Women dress in traditional red and white saaris intricately decorated for the occasion and men wear Punjabis and dhotis. People wish each other ‘Shubho Naboborsho’ (Happy New Year) and gather with friends and family to share a special meal that consists of the ever-favorite luchi and chholar daal followed by fish and desserts. Join us for an intimate in-kitchen dining experience — only 16 seats available, so reserve soon! You will enjoy an authentic Bengali New Year celebration as Chef Bidisha Nag of Create Your Curry shares her story of growing up in Kolkata, West Bengal, the history of the Bengali New Year and its intersection with neighboring Bangladesh, and the great migration of the Bengali people spurred by the partitions of the 20th century – in a gorgeous saari, of course!

Meet the Chef:

Bidisha Nag holds a Ph.D. in Cultural and Human Geography and has held several faculty positions in the U.S. As a child she traveled around the world on ships with her family. When she first moved to the U.S., Bidisha began to offer Indian cooking classes in her home as a way to get to know her neighbors and colleagues and took the concept with her as she relocated to new states and cities. The classes were so popular, she started a business – Create Your Curry. Today, Bidisha offers twice-monthly classes at 1400 Food Lab as well as private classes in her clients’ homes. Recently, her story was published in the Foreign Policy Project podcast on Culinary Diplomacy.
