Backpacking Basics & Leave No Trace Instruction

Erin and I are more than excited to announce our first backpacking trip for 2018 in early May! We CANNOT wait to get out in the woods with you this year and this trip is the perfect beginning! Learn how to backpack in the Appalachian Foothills with Clintonville Outfitters! We will spend the weekend learning the basics of backpacking while exploring part of the Buckeye Trail and North Country Trail that runs through Shawnee State Park. We will hike 19.6 miles of Shawnee State Forest’s north-loop backpacking trail while learning navigation, backcountry cooking, how to hang a bear bag, hiking etiquette, proper camp set-up, Leave No Trace, and so much more! This time of year is when the forest comes live with animals and foliage, this is a can’t miss trip.

Day 1: Arrive at Clintonville Outfitters at 6:00 a.m. Learn how to pack your pack and drive 2 hours to Shawnee State Park. We will hike 6.3 miles to camp 1, stopping for breaks, water, and lunch. Learn how to dispose of waste properly, hang a bear bag, travel and camp on durable surfaces, and backcountry cooking. Once we set up camp, we will cook dinner.

Day 2: Wake up and cook breakfast. Pack up camp and hike 8.9 miles to camp 3, stopping for breaks, water, and lunch. Once we set up camp, we will cook dinner. Learn how to minimize campfire impacts and hiking etiquette.

Day 3: Wake up and cook breakfast. We will hike 4.4 miles back to the van stopping for breaks, water, and lunch. Learn to leave what you find. Arrive back to Clintonville Outfitters by 4:00 p.m.
