As part of the Heartland Bank Music Series, Notes is proud to present an evening of stories and song from Melanie, the First Lady of Woodstock, on Thursday, December 7, 2017, from 7:00 to 11:00 pm.

Melanie burst onto the scene, as a young singer/songwriter, with an electrifying performance at the Woodstock Music Festival. In the three years following that memorable performance, she rocketed to the top of the music world. She had 13 Top 40 hits, including 3 No. 1s. Rolling Stone Magazine dubbed her “The Female Bob Dylan”. She was the first female artist in history to have 3 songs in the Billboard Top 40 simultaneously. She sold over 80 million records worldwide. With guitar in hand and a talent that combined amazing vocal range, disarming humor, and a vibrant engagement with life, she produced classic hit after hit (such as “Look What They Done To My Song Ma”, “Lay Down/Candles in the Rain [the Woodstock anthem], “Brand New Key” [the roller skate song], “Beautiful People”, and many more.

She was named Female Artist of the Year by Billboard, Cash Box, Melody Maker, Record World, and Bravo. She won an Emmy. Ed Sullivan said that he hadn’t seen such a “dedicated and responsive audience since Elvis Presley”. She was the first solo artist to appear from the Royal Albert Hall to Carnegie Hall, from the Metropolitan Opera House to the Sydney Opera House, to the General Assembly of the United Nations (where, on several occasions, she was greeted with standing ovations from the delegates).

Then, at the height of her success and popularity, she walked away from the music world to dedicate her life to her children and to her family. But she has never stopped writing and recording. Over the years, she has now released over 40 albums of heartfelt, original music. Recently, she has been touring, on a very limited basis, and the reviews have been superlative. Copies of some of the media comments can be found on her website (melanie safka.com), along with some of her music, some really cool videos (of her Woodstock performance, her appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Tonight Show, the Johnny Cash Show, with John Lennon at the Concert for Bangladesh, and lots of others).

Melanie will be accompanied for this show by her son, Beau Jarred, a very accomplished multi instrumentalist in his own right. This will be a very rare opportunity to see an artist, so beloved by millions, in such a close, intimate setting.
