An Afternoon with Elizabeth Catte

April 8, 2018 3:00 pm @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Flyover Library at Wild Goose Creative is proud to host Elizabeth Catte, historian, Appalachian, and author of What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia.

The 2016 election gave rise to a type of journalism in which reporters tried to explain how Trump could become president. That journalism focused a bit heavily on Appalachia, partly due to the success of JD Vance’s book, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. A portion of the reading public felt that the book represented an already misunderstood region, but for many who come from or currently live in the region, much of Vance’s book did not ring true. Elizabeth Catte delivers us the truth about Appalachia. By looking through a much wider lens than that directed at one family, Catte brings us the rich history of Appalachia, as well as a look at the more racially and economically diverse Appalachia that exists, but is often ignored by popular media. Catte helps us understand not only Vance’s role in the vast misunderstanding of Appalachia, but also helps us understand the narrative that is constantly constructed by a media that enters the region with one story in mind, and rarely works to expand upon it.

Seventy-seven counties in Ohio are considered Appalachian. If you live in Columbus, you either have family in Appalachia, or you know someone who does. You may be from Appalachia yourself. If you want to know more about Appalachia, and what is right within it, then you don’t want to miss this event. Catte will read from her book, as well as answer audience questions.
