America’s Got Zombies: Living with the Undead

October 30, 2019 6:00 pm @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

This Halloween’s Eve, join us at Seventh Son Brewing as we delve into the chilling origin story of the American Zombie, with quality local brews, Zombie trivia, and a costume competition!

Zombies, rooted in the lore of West Africa, come to us via Haiti and the stories told by US Marines who occupied the country for 20 years starting in 1915. Haitian zombies were pitiful creatures – powerless, lost souls and not to be feared. It was the zombie masters—the Bokors—and their powerful magic that frightened and terrified the masses. This all changed in 1968 with George Romero’s film, Night of the Living Dead. Zombies (referenced as ghouls) were recast as murderous, hungry monsters that represented the era’s anxieties.

Recent books and films celebrate our strength and cunning as we learn to survive the zombie apocalypse. They also confront renewed fears of death, disease, science, and technology, as well as the stranger. On this night, we explore how the zombie was transformed from the pitied victim of the Bokor to a dangerous, undead monster that threatens our wellbeing.

While not mandatory, costumes are highly encouraged, so get out your most realistic fake blood and most pallid make-up for this celebration of the living dead. Both a Zombie King and Zombie Queen will be crowned at the end of the event, complete with Zombie themed prizes!
