American Festival – and why it matters

The Underground Railroad is a part of American history both dear and painful to all of us. The stories of how a handful of daring people helped black men and women escape the horror of slavery by fleeing through Ohio and north to Canada where they would be free are both inspiring and terrifying.

The concerts at the Ohio Theater October 11 and 12 are another chapter in those stories. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec’s Sanctuary Road is based on real accounts from the Underground Railroad, as recorded by William Still, a conductor in the railroad and hero of the abolitionist era.

The piece is set for five solo singers, a narrator, chorus, and full orchestra, who will bring this music to life under the guide of conductor Rossen Milanov. The American Festival also features selections from the quintessential American opera, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess – an audience favorite that includes the classics “Summertime,” “Bess, You Is My Woman Now,” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”

Join us in the theatre at 6:30p for a pre-concert discussion.
