movie series at Gateway Film Center

As school bells ring again and we count down the days to our favorite holiday, the independent, nonprofit Gateway Film Center anticipates the reimagined sequel of Halloween with a fall filled with genre and cult classics including a John Carpenter retrospective as part of its new 21 & Over series.

John Carpenter is widely referred to as the “master of horror.” After a 43-year career in the film industry, Carpenter has directed some of the most successful, seminal, provocative, imaginative, intense, and frightening films in cinema history. Even more, a number of his films have clearly been ahead of their time, and have slowly been rediscovered and reassessed by audiences and academics in recent years. Without a doubt, films such as The Thing and They Live establish Carpenter as a true visionary of the fantastic cinema. At the same time, he has reinvented and resurrected the western in the form of action, horror, and science fiction films. As Michael Myers returns to the big screen, Gateway Film Center is proud to present a retrospective of some of Carpenter’s most influential work as part of its new 21 & Over series:

· 8/31 – ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981)
· 9/7 – THE THING (1982)
· 9/14 – BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986)
· 9/21 – THEY LIVE (1988) 30th anniversary
· 9/28 – HALLOWEEN (1978) 40th anniversary

“21 & Over was created to present a wide variety of newly released titles and cult classics in the comfy confines of our 21-seat screening room,” shared Gateway Film Center president Chris Hamel. “John Carpenter’s unique body of genre work – particularly that created during his extraordinary run in the ‘70s and ‘80s – holds a particular fascination for a new generation of audiences and young filmmakers.”

In 1978, Halloween introduced moviegoers to horror icon Michael Myers and launched the big screen career of Jamie Lee Curtis. And all these 40 years and seven sequels later, much like Michael Myers, it just won’t die. Gateway Film Center will present John Carpenter’s classic film for an extended run for all 31 days of October in celebration of its 40th anniversary and the release of the new Halloween (opening October 18). In addition, the film center will also present the 4K restoration of The Fog (opening October 26) starring Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Janet Leigh. Carpenter’s first title after Halloween, he directed, co-wrote the screenplay, and composed the music for the eerie supernatural thriller.

Tickets for 21 & Over screenings are $21 ($15 for myGFC members) which includes admission and one drink ticket. With exclusive pre-show content and your own private bartender, you can live like a Hollywood big shot every Friday night.
