1400 Food Lab: Eight Flavors of Vanilla with Sarah Lohman

Please join 1400 Food Lab in a big “O-H” welcome back to “historic gastonomist” and Ohio native, Sarah Lohman, author of Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisineand the blog, FourPoundFlour.

Get to know Sarah and explore one of the eight flavors that has influenced American cuisine – vanilla. Did you know that vanilla was discovered by a twelve-year-old slave on an island off the coast of Madagascar? In this how-to workshop and presentation, you’ll learn the origin and this history behind the flavor while Sarah demonstrates how to make your own custard base for homemade vanilla ice cream. Sarah will also discuss how to make your own sorbet and other frozen desserts that will showcase one of America’s favorite flavors.

Participants will indulge in homemade vanilla ice cream and will receive a signed paperback copy of Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine.

Sarah Lohman’s first book, Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine was published in December 2016. Weaving together original research, historical recipes, gorgeous illustrations and Sarah’s own adventures both in the kitchen and in the field, Eight Flavorsis a delicious treat (Bustle).

Sarah works with culinary history as a way to make a personal connection with the past. She chronicles her explorations in culinary history on her blog, FourPoundsFlour.com, and her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, the NY Post, The Atlantic and NPR. She appeared in The Cooking Channel’s Food: Fact or Fiction.
