After 13 years of serving up South American cuisine to Downtown residents and workers, owners Carlos and Carolina Gutierrez made the announcement of the restaurant’s impending closure in a Facebook post on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

“It is with mixed feelings of excitement and nostalgia that we are announcing the closing of our flagship Arepazo restaurant Downtown on Pearl St.,” they said. “Make your way to our Pearl location to enjoy the last days of our wonderful journey.”

El Arepazo first opened up in 2005 and has since grown to three locations, expanding to Gahanna in 2012 and the Brewery District in 2014. Those restaurants will remain open.

El Arepazo is known for their wide selection of arepas, a dish native to Colombia and Venezuela featuring a corn pancake with an assortment of fillings. They also offer a diverse menu of entrees, ranging from tostadas and empanadas, to crab cakes and fish tacos.

The Gutierrezes have yet to announce an official date of closure.

“We are still open. Stay tuned for our last day,” they said. “We thank you from the bottom of our heart for a wonderful 13 years and we hope you will continue visiting us at our other two locations.”
