Demolition of Poindexter Tower to Begin Tomorrow

After years of sitting vacant, the wrecking ball arrives tomorrow to begin demolition of the 10-story Poindexter Tower building located on Mount Vernon Avenue on the Near East Side.

“As this monument to blight comes down, we see signs of hope spring up around it,” said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “From the Lincoln Theater to University Hospital East, this neighborhood is on the rebound.”

Leaders from the City of Columbus, Franklin County and the Near East Side neighborhoods with gather tomorrow at the site at 10am to kick off the demolition.

The 27-acre Poindexter Village community surrounding the tower is also slated for demolition as residents have been slowly moved out of the multiple buildings in the neighborhood over the past two years. The area is now mostly boarded up.

Additionally, a larger master planning effort for the Near East Side known as Partners Achieving Community Transformation (PACT) is conducting a series of ongoing meetings to determine how residents want to see these sites redeveloped amongst other neighborhood revitalization programs.
