In September, long-time North Market cheese merchant Curds & Whey closed their doors after 28 years in business, but owner Mike Kast isn’t retiring for good. Weiland’s Market announced on Friday that Kast would be joining their crew in the cheese department, bringing his years of expertise and knowledge to the Clintonville store.

“We’re very excited to have Mike join our team,” says Weiland’s owner Jennifer Williams. “He has so much experience and knowledge about cheese to share with customers.”

Kast is joining Weiland’s existing Certified Cheese Professional Kent Rand, who will pick up department duties during off days and busier days when two staffers are needed. Kasts’ presence will likely be a draw for Curds & Whey customers who already miss their North Market cheese shop.

“I met half the city working at the Market,” Kast says. “I had people that came in 25 years ago and started off getting Colby. Over the years, I made suggestions and we did tastings and now they’re up into the real exotic mountain cheeses of Switzerland. Their tastes improved as mine did.”
