Columbus Crew SC watched a 2-0 lead against Montreal Impact fizzle away before grabbing the winning goal in the dying moments of the game to give Crew SC the win as MLS returned to MAPFRE for the 2018 MLS season.
After last week’s impressive 2-0 win at defending Champions, Toronto FC, Columbus Crew SC started out strong with two goals in the first 15 minutes and looked like they may just run away with the game.
Talismanic midfielder Federico Higuain opened scoring with a 12th minute penalty kick, before newly aquired forward Gyasi Zardes continued his red-hot start to life in black and gold by being in the right place at the right time to divert the ball over the line after it bounced back off of the Montreal cross-bar.
Montreal turned the tabled in the second half as Ignacio Piatti halved the deficit before Raheem Edwards equilized with a screaming volley just five minutes from time.
Edwards went from hero to villian in the 93rd minute as he stumbled into Crew substitute Luis Argudo in the box to gift Crew SC with a chance to take 3 points. Zardes stepped up to emphatically bury the ball beyond a diving Evan Bush in the Montreal goal and snatch the victory for the home side.
