Crew SC Suffers First Loss of the Season to Vancouver
Two-time Columbus Crew SC “reject”, Kei Kamara returned to MAPFRE Stadium on Saturday night to score the winning goal, and hand Crew SC their first loss of the year, as Vancouver ended the early afternoon contest with a 2-1 victory.
A lackluster first half ended with Crew SC in the lead as Gyasi Zardes continued his early season hot-streak with the opening goal after Vancouver goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic’s save off of Pedro Santos’ long-range attempt found its way to the foot of Zardes who smashed the ball into the open net.
Brek Shea levelled the game shortly after half-time and late into the half Vancouver thought they’d taken the lead, only to have the goal ruled out by marvels of modern technology, otherwise known as the VAR system, that (after review) showed a deliberate hand ball from a Vancouver player.
In the 78th minute, Kamara was first to meet at Felipe cross and, just like old times, saw his powerful header end up in the back of the goal to silence the home crowd and bring the long running unbeaten run to a subdued and disappointing end.
