The Crew slipped from the top of the Eastern Conference after battling to a goalless draw against the San Jose Earthquakes on a chilly and rainy Saturday night at Crew Stadium.

The draw was enough to secure post season action for the Crew but the end of season slump and third straight home game without scoring out allowed New York to leapfrog Columbus to the top spot in the East and now look like favorites to clinch the division title.

The Crew started the brighter of the two teams but never really tested San Jose and ex-Crew ‘keeper Jon Busch until the second half when Steven Lenhart and Chad Marshall were both denied by several top class saves.

At the other end, Columbus shot-stopper William Hesmer capped his 11th shut-out of the season with brilliant one handed save to stop a goal-bound header from Chris Wondolowski in the 70th minute of the game.

The Crew travel to Seattle in midweek for the U.S Open Cup before returning to MLS action against the Fire in Chicago on Oct 8.

Columbus Crew — William Hesmer, Frankie Hejduk, Chad Marshall, Andy Iro, Shaun Francis, Eddie Gaven (Robbie Rogers 81), Brian Carroll, Kevin Burns, Emmanuel Ekpo (Emilio Renteria 66), Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Steven Lenhart (Andres Mendoza 84).

Substitutes Not Used: Eric Brunner, Adam Moffat, Gino Padula, Andy Gruenebaum.
