It’s August. And it’s really, really hot. But this Saturday evening, things are going to get full-out scorching. Local artist collective Cowtown Lowbrow will host a “Hot As Hell” show at Junctionview Studios from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Admission, beer, and barbecue are all free.
Cowtown Lowbrow was founded in 2007 by Dan Gerdeman and includes local artists Coreroc, Sharon Dorsey, Cyrus Fire, Marina Goldshteyn, Joey Monsoon, Stephanie Rond, and Carolyn Slebodnik. It embraces “lowbrow” art, which lends inspiration from West Coast car culture, East Coast graffiti, underground comic books, video games, tattoos, and concert posters. “We’re interested in work that’s meaningful and in your face,” Dan said. “Instead of focusing on things that are purely conceptual, we fuse craft with thoughtfulness and funkiness.”
“Hot As Hell” will feature a collection of paintings by Cowtown Lowbrow artists incorporating the themes of heat, hell, Ohio, and any combination thereof. “August in Ohio is hot as hell,” Dan said. “If you stand outside at high noon, the sun will burn a hole through your head. As soon as you step out of the air conditioning, the humidity soaks you. So we decided to push August heat in Ohio even further.” Throughout the show, each artist will create live Raku clay sculptures that will be fired on site. All paintings and Raku sculptures will be available for sale.
“August heat, Raku firings, beer, and BBQ,” Dan said. “I can’t think of anything that sounds better than that.” Visit facebook.com/cowbrowcolumbus and junctionviewstudios.com for more information.
