Editor’s Note 3/25/2020: As of 3/21/2020, the federal income tax filing due date is officially extended to 7/15/2020. This official order extends both the filing deadline and federal tax payments regardless of amount. The IRS said taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this automatic federal tax filing and payment relief. The organization also encouraged taxpayers due a refund to file as most refunds are still being issued within three weeks.
As of this update, the State of Ohio has not issued an extension.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced on Tuesday, March 17 that taxpayers will have an extra 90 days to pay their 2019 federal taxes.
Delaying the traditional April 15 deadline, individuals and small business owners can defer payments of up to $1 million for 90 days, and corporations can defer payments of up to $10 million for 90 days.
Taxpayers won’t be subject to interest or penalties during the deferment period.
The announcement applies only to federal tax income payments. States are to set their own deadlines.
According to the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), Ohio officials have said they would mirror IRS guidance. The Ohio Society of CPAs have also sent a letter to the state requesting an extension to the income tax filing and payment deadlines in response to the pandemic.
The Ohio Department of Taxation has not yet released any official statement on a change in deadline – meaning as of publishing (3/18/2020), state income tax is still due by April 15.
The Ohio Department of Taxation’s walk-in center is currently closed due to Coronavirus concerns, but contact information is available on its website.
