When Joe Kahn launched his build-your-own-tacos restaurant in the Tremont neighborhood in Cleveland in 2012, he had no idea it would prove to be so popular. The restaurant, known as Barrio Tacos (not to be confused with the short-lived Barrio Tapas here in Columbus), opened a second location in Lakewood in 2013, but then Kahn sold the business to his partners and decided to bring the concept to a different market with a different name: Condado.

“It’s a pretty cool concept and it did extremely well in Cleveland,” he explained. “We’ll see if we can do well here, open a few here in Columbus and then take the concept national.”

Kahn credits Columbus’ reputation as a test market city as the biggest draw for opening here. He also said that the plan to launch Condado at 1227 North High Street (the former Circus Bar location) was also very intentional as he hopes to capture a mix of students and alumni from OSU as well as the residential and visitor demographics of The Short North.

“We had that kind of mix at Barrio with grad students from Case Western and young professionals from the area,” said Kahn. “There’s so much traffic on High Street in the Short North. This is really a great area.”

The menu at Condado works very similar to many sushi restaurants: you’re given a form to fill out with a variety of meats, veggies, fillings, toppings, sauces and taco shell types. That information is then given to the kitchen, where your tacos are built to order and delivered back to your table. Everything in the kitchen is made from scratch daily, including 10-hour braised beef, homemade chorizo, shrimp ceviche, as well as vegan/vegetarian options like tofu and portabella mushrooms.

“Our bar will feature build-your-own Margaritas with different styles and fresh juices,” added Kahn. “We’ll have 50 types of whiskey and 50 types of tequila in addition to our full bar.”

Condado Tacos is aiming to soft open on November 19th or 20th with an official grand opening scheduled for November 28th.
