Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds’ most recent studio album, The Weather Below (2015), spawned the hit single “Sugar” – the video for which gained the band massive exposure on YouTube. In March, they released the live album Fowl Play. Lead singer Arleigh Kincheloe, along with her brother Jackson (harmonica), Sasha Brown (guitar), Josh Myers (bass), Phil Rodriguez (trumpet), Brian Graham (saxophones) and Dan Boyden (drums), first came together in 2008, releasing their self-titled debut in 2010. Pound of Dirt followed in 2012 and an EP, Fight, landed in 2013 – the latter of which was recorded and produced by veteran producer and American Idol alumnus Randy Jackson. The band has toured extensively over the past decade-and-a-half, performing more than seven hundred shows, and have been featured on NPR’s acclaimed Tiny Desk Concerts series.

They will be joined on Friday by folk-pop locals Bella Ruse and Joey Hendrickson – a co-founder of the CSA – who will appear with his band, The Sleepless Nights.

Columbus Songwriters Association has become the largest organization of its kind in the Midwest since its inception in 2012 by Hendrickson, entrepreneur Derek DuPont, and a passionate group of twenty-five local songwriters. Its mission is “to empower the lives of songwriters in Columbus…through collaboration between music community, city, and commerce, (to) help build the music scene in Columbus by creating real opportunities for local songwriters.”

The concert is just one way in which CSA is generating important capital for local talent. “Supporting the talented songwriters of our city is something that Notes is committed to doing by hosting events like this as well as offering an open mic night every Wednesday,” said Terry Turner, co-founder and president of Copious and Notes Lounge in the Brewery District. “We are excited to partner with the Columbus Songwriters Association, Heartland Bank, and 90.5 FM WCBE to offer a show featuring both local and national artists to support the cause.  Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds are a dynamic and talented band with a growing cult following, and their recent song ‘Sugar’ has gone viral on YouTube.  This is a must-see concert for music-lovers.”

CSA’s programs also include songwriter showcases that expose artists to industry personnel and audiences, teaching and advocacy initiatives, venues for creative collaborations, and partnerships with companies and organizations that seek to put local songwriters to work.

Over one hundred tickets have been sold for Friday’s event, but a limited number of general admission tickets remain along with some VIP tables (call the venue at 614-947-1520 to verify current availability).

The Columbus Songwriters Association Benefit Concert, featuring Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds and special guests Bella Ruse and Joey Hendrickson and The Sleepless Nights will take place on Friday, August 5 at Notes Lounge in the Brewery District, 520 South High Street. General admission tickets remain for $20 (plus fees), and can be purchased here. Admission is restricted to guests 21 years of age and over.
