The winners of the annual “Ohio’s Best Journalism Contest” were officially announced today by the Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, and for the second year in a row, Columbus Underground was named the Best Digital Media General News Site in the state of Ohio.
This year’s contest was judged by members of The Long Island Press Club, who provided the following note about Columbus Underground:
“Hands-down winner. This local news site has it all and does it well.”
Columbus Underground and its staff picked up several other awards in the areas of journalism, editorial writing and photography, including:
- Best Editorial Writing – Digital Media – First Place – Opinion: Police Need to Join Protestors, Rally For Self-Reform by Lauren Sega
- Best Online Still Photographer in Ohio – Digital Media – Second Place – Food Photography (Series) by Lillian Dent
- Best Freelance Writer – Digital Media – First Place – Music Interviews (Series) by Grant Walters
Additionally, Columbus Underground sister publication TheMetropreneur.com won a first place award for Best Digital Media Specialized Journalism Site, with a note stating that it is viewed as “a thorough, targeted, well-developed concept highlighting small business issues in Central Ohio.”
Award winning journalists and news publishers from all across the state of Ohio will be celebrated at an upcoming luncheon on Saturday, August 26th at the Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
