Columbus is turning 200 in 2012. The year-long celebration will take place throughout the entire region, but individual neighborhoods are now being encouraged to get creative with their celebratory initiatives with the assistance of a grant from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation and the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

“Vibrant neighborhoods define great cities, and central Ohio is teeming with great neighborhoods,” said Jim Malz, president of Chase in Ohio. “We want to inspire our neighbors to get creative and join in the once-in-a-lifetime celebration of our city and our region.”

Neighborhoods from all over the seven-county region are being encouraged to apply for grants ranging from $500 to $10,000 to help fund individual projects that honor our past, celebrate the present and provide a vision of the future. Some of the examples for applications include legacy projects, works of art, customized performances or other creative activities.

“The Columbus Bicentennial seeks to create a community that is more inspired and proud of the increasing vitality of Columbus,” said Milt Baughman, President of the Greater Columbus Arts Council. “Chase is helping us to accomplish one of the core goals of the Bicentennial—engaging and promoting the neighborhoods that are the building blocks of our great city.”

All neighborhoods located within Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Madison, Pickaway and Union counties are eligible to apply for grants. Applications must be filed by a non-profit organization. Grants will be issued based on the following factors: creativity, broad resident engagement, level of collaboration among multiple residents and organizations, commitment to raise matching funds and in-kind support for the project, legacy/sustainable aspects of the project and thematic consistency with the overall 200Columbus Celebration.

There are two application deadlines: October 17, 2011 and February 15, 2012.
