Columbus, along with 19 other North American cities, has made the finalist list for the $5 billion Amazon HQ2 mega-project that will add eight million square feet of office space and bring 50,000 high-paying jobs to one city.

Columbus is the only city in Ohio to make the cut. Other cities and regions still in the running include:

  • Toronto
  • Indianapolis
  • Chicago
  • Denver
  • Nashville
  • Los Angeles
  • Dallas
  • Austin
  • Boston
  • New York City
  • Newark
  • Pittsburgh
  • Philadelphia
  • Montgomery County (MD)
  • Washington DC
  • Raleigh
  • Northern Virginia
  • Atlanta
  • Miami

A total of 238 cities and municipalities originally submitted bids for the project.

“We’re thrilled to continue working with Amazon on HQ2,” stated Kenny McDonald, president and CEO of Columbus 2020. “The Columbus Region has grown at an unprecedented rate by collaborating and prioritizing economic development and today’s news reflects that. We’re proud that Amazon has recognized that the Columbus Region is brimming with talent, competitive and prepared to serve market-leading, world-changing companies. We’re ready to get to work on the next phase of the process.”

City officials formally submitted the Columbus bid for the project in October 2017. Any city to win this project could be radically transformed by the development. The 75-acre Arena District constructed in Downtown Columbus contains 1.5 million square feet of office space, approximately 20 percent of what the Amazon HQ2 project will build out.

“Clearly, they see that Columbus has the skilled workforce, world-class educational institutions, phenomenal infrastructure and culture of collaboration that helps businesses operate mission-critical facilities 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” stated Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. “While Amazon has not yet shared with us the next steps, the City of Columbus will continue to coordinate with Columbus 2020 on this exciting opportunity for our community.”
