Columbus Dining Institution Expanding with New Patio
East side dining institution The Top, 2891 E. Main St., will nearly triple the seating capacity of its patio with an outdoor overhaul.
Serving steaks to Central Ohio since 1955, The Top has soldiered on as an old-school dining destination, with dim lighting, wood paneling, leather booths and in-house pianist.
Co-Owner and General Manager Jean Adkins, who took ownership of the restaurant with husband and Chef, Denver, in 2006, says the patio will have some of the same vibes as the indoor dining experience.
Deep bench booths will flank both sides of the 15-person outdoor bar. With additional tables, the patio will seat about 85 guests total, nearly tripling the previous patio’s 25-30 seats.
The Top’s old patio was constructed in 2005, and while the restaurant had created a quaint, intimate outdoor dining experience, Adkins says they had been talking about expanding the space for three or four years.
“When the pandemic hit this really kind of opened up our eyes that this something we should do now,” she says.
The new patio will present The Top with more options at a time when outdoor dining space is at a premium, despite encouraging news when it comes to the pandemic.
“I think that it just gives so many more options for guests that are still going to be a little fearful of being inside,” Adkins says.
The Top demolished its previous patio to make way for the new one, which will stretch all the way down the west side of the building.
Adkins’ sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Matt Schoedinger have taken the helm on design, with plans to incorporate elements like a water feature.
The patio will serve The Top’s full menu, and Adkins says with the additional space, they are seriously exploring brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
While Adkins loves a good patio outing at other Columbus dining establishments like Lindey’s and Barcelona, she’s excited to bring that kind of patio experience to the east side.
Construction on The Top’s new patio is underway, with plans to open this summer, likely by the beginning of July if not before.
