Franklin County and other Central Ohio counties’ unemployment rates are up from May, according to a report recently released by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.
Each monthly report shows the small percentage rises and drops in employment county- and statewide. This month Ohio’s average unemployment rate came down from 5.1 percent in May to 5 percent in June. By contrast, Franklin County’s unemployment rate went from 4.3 in June of last year to 3.8 in May of this year, only to creep back up to 4.1 percent in June.
Similarly, the Columbus unemployment rate was at 4.3 percent in June of last year, sunk to 3.9 percent in May of this year, but came back up in June to 4.2 percent. Franklin County is one of 46 counties with an unemployment rate of 4.9 percent or lower. Of the remaining counties, seven hang at 7.3 percent or higher, including Monroe County with the highest unemployment rate of 10.2 percent; 32 counties have rates between 5.2 and 7.2 percent; and three counties are between 5 and 5.1 percent.
Franklin County has the 16th lowest unemployment rate out of Ohio’s 88 counties.
