Chipotle unveiled major plans yesterday to relocate their headquarters from Denver to Newport Beach, California, and that news also includes plans to close their New York City offices and consolidate company jobs to their existing branch offices here in Columbus.
While the news is unfortunate for Denver, the city where the burrito chain opened its first location, it’s positive news for the Columbus offices, which are expected to grow from 100 employees to over 250.
“We have a tremendous opportunity at Chipotle to shape the future of our organization and drive growth through our new strategy,” said Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol. “In order to align the structure around our strategic priorities, we are transforming our culture and building world-class teams to revitalize the brand and enable our long-term success.”
Central Ohio has long been a hotbed for restaurant industry jobs, including national and regional firms such as Wendy’s, White Castle, Bob Evans, Donatos, Piada, Sunny Street Cafe, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, City Barbeque, Bibibop, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants and more. That local economic specialty appears to be a factor in Chipotle’s decision to grow their operations in Columbus, according to their press release:
“Consolidating in Columbus provides access to high-quality talent and offers cost advantages to support Chipotle’s standardized business operations.”
