“We have had a great response each year and this year it will be at Tuller Square Park – an exciting new venue for us,” said Loretta Zedella, yoga teacher for City of Dublin and leader at the International Day of Yoga. “It’s a nice way for the community to get together. Also, it’s hard to beat free yoga!”

Declared an international day of yoga by the United Nationals General Assembly in 2015, the day is celebrated on the Summer Solstice. This year, that day is June 21, the longest day in the Northern hemisphere.

Besides yoga asana, there will be a meditation/breathing session led by Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh. In a 2014 UN speech the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift, it is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being.”

Various events have been held all over the world, including a gathering of 10,000 people in Wuxi, China. On June 21, 2018, Prime Minister Modi led 50,000 volunteers in yoga in Dehardun, India. The Guinness World record is over 100,000 people who gathered in Kota, Rajasthan, India last year.

The Columbus event is celebrating its fourth anniversary this year. All levels are definitely welcome and all ages, as it is a very kid-friendly event. Bring a water bottle and a mat (if you have one).

Participating this year is:

• Loretta Zedella, representing the City of Dublin where she worked before moving to Ashville
• Harbor Yoga
• Kara Lough from Pai Yoga
• Mary Coleman from Balancing Owl
• Columbus Ashtanga
• Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)
• City of Dublin and the yoga studios often have some freebies as at past events

The International Day of Yoga is Friday June 21, 2019 from 6 – 8 p.m. Pre-registration is not required. No restrooms are available, and the event will be cancelled in severe weather. The event will be held at Tuller Square Park at 4270 John Shield Parkway, Dublin.
