Cause Collaborative Kicks Off Next Friday

Fulcrum Creatives and Community Shares of Mid Ohio are partnering on May 13 to host Cause Collaborative, a one-day workshop conference intended to help local nonprofits share ideas, collaborate, and network. The event will be held at Wild Goose Creative, located at 2491 Summit St., from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A light breakfast, three guided question-and-answer sessions with Columbus nonprofit professionals, lunch by Freshbox Catering, and a cocktail hour are on the day’s agenda.

“The nonprofit community is so diverse that we wanted to make sure this was reflected in our events and panels,” said Jason Moore, principal at Fulcrum. “While Cause Collaborative is geared towards small to medium-sized nonprofits, the panels were structured to include nonprofits from the full spectrum in size and issue areas.”

Panel discussion No. 1, “Building and Maintaining Your Brand,” will be moderated by Moore. The panelists include Lourdes Barroso De Padilla, executive director of City Year; Chris Hurtubise, senior director of marketing & communications at COSI; and Jami Goldstein, vice president of marketing, communications & events for the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

We have seen a lack of quality branding for many small and medium-sized nonprofits, either because they do not have the resources −financial or the right people for the job− or they do not yet understand the value of it, said Liz Samuelson, principal at Fulcrum.

Panel discussion No. 2, “Non Traditional Fundraising,” will be moderated by Laura MacDonald, president of Benefactor. Panelists include Melissa Magers, executive director of Community Shares of Mid Ohio; Alice Foeller Hohl, public relations director for the Salvation Army; and David Parker, president of Cause Impact.

Non traditional fundraising is important because, given the current economy and many nonprofits having to compete over limited funding, there are opportunities for new and innovative ways to give, Samuelson said.

Panel discussion No. 3, “The Cost of Free (Hazards of Relying Too Heavily on Volunteers),” will be moderated by Yolanda Moser, T.E.E.N. advocate/wellness & garden coordinator for Godman Guild. Panelists include Meredith Joy, executive director of YayBikes!; Catherine Girves, executive director of the University Area Enrichment Association; Rachel Finney, director of operations for the Capital Area Humane Society; and Trish Dehnbostel, director of healthful food access for Local Matters.

Small and medium-sized nonprofits tend to rely too heavily on volunteers for professional services that should be paid for, Samuelson said. Consequently, jobs done by volunteers can take too long or not be done properly, which can inevitably do more harm than good in the long run.

The event’s organizers said they hope attendees gain inspiration, new ideas to help their causes, and partnership opportunities.

Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, though payment also will be accepted at the door. Tickets are $30 and can purchased at CauseCollaborative.com.
