CATCO and CATCO is Kids have announced their new artistic director, Leda Hoffmann, former artistic director of Chicago-based Strawdog Theatre Company, after a nationwide search.

Hoffmann will jointly take over the role left by CATCO’s former producing director Steven Anderson — who just recently retired at the end of July — along with Christy Farnbauch, who joined the CATCO team as executive director in April.

Last October, after the announcement of Anderson’s retirement, CATCO announced it would reorganize its leadership structure to include two equal executive positions — an executive director with local community connections and an artistic director to set strategic goals and direct the artistic vision. The new structure for CATCO is an apparent standard in the theatre world.

“It goes without saying that I am thrilled about coming to CATCO, and I look forward to continuing CATCO and CATCO is Kids’ commitment to creating quality theatre for both young people and adults,” Hoffmann, who also served as director of community engagement, literary coordinator and education coordinator at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, said via press release.

“I also am excited to build upon the theatre’s reputation to bring bold, progressive and exciting work to Columbus audiences, ensuring our theatre is a place for all members of our community,” she continued.

Hoffmann also commented on the current state of theatre during the coronavirus pandemic, saying that despite closures, there is currently “uncharted opportunities” for theatres like CATCO in terms of outdoor or online theatre productions.

“Although we are not producing theatre in its familiar form, we can be innovative and adapt performances that still delight, challenge and transport,” she said. “Such ventures would present CATCO and CATCO is
Kids to current patrons and subscribers in a new format, and also serve as a gateway to connect with other members of the community.”
