The 4th annual Arch Award winner was announced last Thursday at the Columbus Historical Society’s Savor the City Gala. Candice Watkins was chosen as the winner. This year’s nominees also included John Angelo, and Darci Congrove and John Pribble III.

These distinguished community leaders were suggested by readers of Columbus Underground. Past Arch award recipients Michael Wilkos (2010) and Elizabeth Lessner (2012) assisted in narrowing down the finalists and Anne and Walker Evans presented the award to a very surprised Candice Watkins.

Upon hearing of her nomination Candice wrote the following:

“Thank you. I am very honored to be nominated, I really prefer co-conspirator as the descriptive terminology. Everyone visions themselves differently than those around them. Co-founder does not really describe the fabulous and deep creative spirit between an idea and translating that to reality – both bricks and mortar and the programming are nothing without each other.”

Upon receiving the Arch Award, she gushed with thanks to Columbus Underground and the Columbus Historical Society for bringing her such bright moments.

“Thank you for the honor – it is especially wonderful because it makes me feel my friends appreciate the work I do.”

Watkins assists with the logistical needs of the Park Street Festival, HighBall Halloween, the Ohioana Book Festival, Hot Times, and ComFest. Over the summer, she helped to build the new Whitehall Food Truck Fest. She has a fledgling company called CenterLine/Street Magic! that works with community talent.

As a music historian, she co-authored three books on music history and produced four audio CDs to document jazz in Columbus. She currently serves as the director of the Arts Foundation Of Olde Towne is also the past board chairperson of Friends Of The Homeless.

As an artist, she works in photography, fiber, printmaking, neon and glass.

Watkins was wonderfully surprised to be the Arch Award recipient for 2013 and stated that she was “honored and will treasure it always.”

Also presented at the event was the President’s Award, which recognizes the hard work of a board member. This year’s President’s Award went to Angie Blevins, for going above and beyond in her dedication to the preservation of Columbus history.
