The former B&T Metals building in Franklinton is finally being scheduled for demolition. This building has been vacant and crumbling for years, despite previously announced plans to convert the site into a mixed-use residential and arts-focused development.
Demolition will kick off on Monday at an event hosted by Mayor Michael B. Coleman, Columbus City Councilmember Zachary M. Klein, developer Zach Robbins of Urban Smart Growth and other neighborhood leaders.
Mayor Coleman brought this development back into the spotlight during this year’s State of the City address in February.
“Private developer Urban Smart Growth Co. will convert an abandoned factory into commercial space for creative business, retail and entertainment uses, and demolish a portion of the nearby B&T Metals site to implement a plan that embraces both living and working along McDowell Street,” Coleman said during the address.
According to details on the Urban Smart Growth website, the master plan for the project includes 100,000 square feet of condominiums aimed at young artistic residents, 80,000 square feet of loft apartments for rent, and 20,000 square feet of non-profit arts and theatrical spaces designed for hosting events.
“This is the most activity East Franklinton has seen in 50 years,” said Chris Sherman, project manager at 400 West Rich Street. “With the eastern portion of B&T coming down, Riverside Bradley now closed and 400 West Rich coming online possibly in the next few weeks, this truly signifies the rebirth of our little corner of the neighborhood.”
“This is the beginning of something really big, said Jim Sweeney, Director of the Franklinton Development Association. “Together we’re going to develop a whole new neighborhood in East Franklinton. Thanks to the mayor and the city for having a great vision.”
