Since 1968, Camp Hamwi has offered a fun, action-packed residential and day camp for young people with diabetes.Ā Each summer, around 175 kids are encouraged to try new skills and explore their unique and individual potential in a fun environment that supports their health and success!

Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA), now part of LifeCare Alliance, partners with Camp Mohaven in Danville, Ohio to host Camp Hamwi each year. Because CODA doesnā€™t own the property, all of the camp equipment is stored at an off-site rental facilityā€”at a constant expense!Ā This Better Together project will supply campers with sports equipment, arts and crafts supplies, camping gear, and a storage pod that will eliminate the costs of storing and transporting equipment to camp each summer.Ā This 8ā€™x40ā€™ storage unit will be permanently housed at camp.

Children with diabetes will be treating their condition the rest of their lives. In addition to traditional camp experiences, like horseback riding, archery, canoeing, nature crafts, and outdoor adventure programs, campers participate in activities that build their knowledge about their own diabetes. By teaching and practicing diabetes self-management techniques, kids learn essential skills that empower them to control their diabetes and avoid or reduce complications.Ā These unique campers learn about nutrition and carbohydrate counting, insulin therapy, and blood-glucose monitoring, all in a recreational setting with peers who are navigating the same experiences.

Your support will mean all kids at camp can play whatever they want, when they want, instead of waiting to take turns because there just isnā€™t enough equipment for everyone.Ā Camp season is right around the cornerā€”help us equip campers at Camp Hamwi with everything they need to enjoy camp!
