Everywhere you look around Columbus, you’re likely to see construction cranes in the sky. For some people that means extra traffic and noise, but to most people it means that our city is growing and evolving. While Columbus Underground Writer Brent Warren covers the daily development beat, the end of the year is a time for reflection as a whole. And when asked, our readers and contributors selected the renovation of The Madison department store buildings as the number one urban development project of 2016.

After purchasing the buildings in late 2014, the local developers at The Day Companies began to seek state tax funding to complete a historic renovation of the group of buildings located on High Street just north of Gay Street. After securing funding in 2015, work began earlier this year on interior renovation work. This fall, the demolition of the two-story structure at 90 North High also took place, which will give way to creating an exterior pedestrian space for the project.

Once fully completed, the renovated buildings will contain over 100,000 square feet of office, retail and residential space, with future plans to potentially add a 12-story hotel building and parking garage on the surface parking lot next door. The renovated project was designed by Meyers + Associates Architecture.
