Best Columbus Event of 2009: Comfest

For the second year in a row, Comfest tops our list of best Columbus Events of the year. Founded in 1972, Comfest celebrated its 37th year in 2009 with the traditional mix of local music, food and culture that everyone has come to expect. The event remains a unique Columbus tradition being completely volunteer-staffed, community-oriented, and corporate-sponsor-free.

Even though Comfest won the number one spot in our reader’s poll by an overwhelming majority, this year’s event was not completely drama-free. Stricter BYOB signage and enforcement annoyed some long-time fans before the festival even began, and tragedy struck on Saturday night when an 18 year-old died in an accidental self-inflicted stabbing incident.

Otherwise, 2009’s Comfest remained vibrant and energetic enough to keep Columbus Underground readers coming back to the popular summertime festival year after year.
