The Eagle Family Candy Company may be one of the oldest family-owned businesses in Columbus. The cozy Beechwold store first opened its doors in 1946, and has been operating ever since. Current owner Dee Dee Eagle, a fourth generation chocolatier, took the helm after her grandfather, the original owner, retired. They’ll be providing sampling of a few of their classic chocolates at CU’s upcoming Best Bites: Sweet Treats event on Feburary 17th.
Eaglettes, their take on turtles, are a signature item – house-roasted pecans and homemade caramel hand-coated in layers of milk chocolate. Next up, creamy peanut butter balls dipped in milk chocolate that any Ohioan worth their salt will recognize as Buckeyes. The Eagle family recipe for the signature nut-shaped candy dates back more than 30 years. Last, but not least, are Dark Operas – chocolates with a rich cream filling, made from heavy whipping cream in lieu of butter.
