Donut queen Heather Morris’ handcrafted donuts are made using all-organic ingredients and locally-sourced products, eschewing the use of all preservatives and additives. The resulting pastries are a blend of exotic and familiar: classic donuts like vanilla cream and lemon poppyseed sit alongside newcomer flavors like mojito, apricot pistachio, and ginger wasabi. Morris sells her fares as a pop-up vendor every other weekend at North Market, both of The Hills Market locations, and various coffee shops around the city. Unsurprisingly, no matter the location, they tend to sell out in a flash.
At CU’s Best Bites: Sweet Treats event held last night, Morris served up fasnachts, fried donuts that are traditionally served on Fat Tuesday to rid the house of fats, lard, and sugar before Ash Wednesday. Homemade chocolate ganache and strawberry preserves respectively filled the insides of the donuts, for a decadent Mardi Gras dessert. The fasnachts gathered enough votes to be named as the BEST BITE of the night!
