One of the most anticipated new restaurants over the past several months is now open. Babushka’s Kitchen, located at 4657 N. High Street in the Beechwold Center, opened their doors yesterday morning. This Cleveland-based eatery is well known up north for their Polish cuisine. We spoke recently with Operating Partner Dennis Bennett to find out more about their new Columbus expansion.

Q: First, can you tell us a bit about the history of Babushka’s Kitchen?

A: Babushka’s Kitchen was founded by Dave and Nancy Abramowski in 1994 in Northfield Center, Ohio. A richer description is provided HERE.

Q: What led to the idea of opening a new location in Columbus?

A: I have been in the food service industry for nearly 30 years and in 2009 found myself with the opportunity to enter the family business and started the planning process with Dave, Nancy, their daughter Jacky (my wife) and her brother and sister David and Beth. Since Jacky and I call Columbus home we decided to look around and see if it made sense to expand the Polish Heritage concept to Columbus.

Q: Was there anything particular about the location in Clintonville/Beechwold that was appealing for an outlet in Central Ohio?

A: The building was already equipped with restaurant infrastructure and the Clintonville community has a reputation for supporting unique, local operations

Q: Tell us a bit about the menu at Babushka and specialties that you are known for.

A: Pierogi, Pierogi, Pierogi!!! We hand craft most items on the menu, from boiling the cabbage and peeling the leaves for Golabki (stuffed cabbage) before assembling the components for two hours of baking in our family recipe spice mix and tomato sauce, to our making, sheeting, filling cooking our award winning pierogi on site. Our trademark dessert is a flaky, fruit filled pastry made by hand and baked fresh daily. Bet you can’t eat just one.

Q: Will there be dining on-site, or is Babushka for take-away prepared foods only?

A: We have just over 100 seats to enjoy polka music while dining as well as take out.

Q: What are your hours of operation at the Columbus location?

A: Tuesday – Thursday 11am – 9pm; Friday and Saturday 11am – 10pm; Sunday 11am – 4pm Buffet Only (kids meals, for the 10 and under crowd, can be ordered on Sundays since that’s what Grandma would do). Closed on Monday. The Sunday buffet is a great opportunity to get all of your favorites without having to order separate entrees as well as great opportunity try different items if you are not familiar with Polish food so you can find your favorites. We will have patio seating when the weather warms up.

Q: Anything else you’d like to add?

A: We are really excited to be expanding in Columbus. The city of Columbus and the community of Clintonville could not have been more welcoming to us. We have leased additional parking two doors to the south at Beechwold Custom Jewelry.
