    At Home: Westgate Tudor

This month we go to the west side neighborhood Westgate, to visit the stylish home of Niki and Josh Quinn. You probably know them as the duo that owns Tigertree in the Short North and their creative line, Maxine Dear. Their personal style inside their home is just as creative; a mix of modern and eclectic with elements of nature sprinkled throughout. The couple moved from LA to Columbus about five years ago and spent some time living in The Greystone Court Apartments in the Short North and then Sixty Spring Downtown before they decided to purchase a home. They wanted a place to call their own, have a garden and workshop and have room for their dogs, Rufus and June. Their home search led them to Westgate, which they ultimately settled on because they liked that the neighborhood is filled with architectural homes and people who keep their homes and yards in great shape. The 1800 sq. ft., 3 bedroom, 1 and 1/2 bath home they found has a wonderful enclosed patio on the side that is one of their favorite characteristics about the home.

One of the first things they did to their home was remove all of the carpet. Except for the kitchen, the entire house had been carpeted in a blue color and they removed all of it to uncover the hardwood floors. When you first walk through the door, the welcoming layout of the furniture invites you in to take a seat and relax. The working fireplace in the living room is a nice touch and adds warmth to the room. Many of the items in the room are found and thrifted. Niki says, “We have gathered different pieces that we love over the years from antique malls, garage sales, Craigslist, etc and we try to make them all work together!” She adds, “we don’t want to be stuck in one certain kind of design…where is the challenge in that?”

Niki’s Father built them this bookcase as a wedding present!

Some of their favorite places you could try finding cool things would be The Heart of Ohio Antique Center in Springfield, Salvation Army on Georgesville Road, Eclectiques Antique Mall in Clintonville, Grandview Mercantile (white couch), leather supply shops (cowhide rug) and even the Columbus Underground Classifieds (Eames chair and ottoman replica)!

    Josh built this lamp:

What if you’ve tried antiquing and thrifting and haven’t found anything great yet? “You need to go often to find good things,” said Josh. Some trips you won’t find anything, others will be filled with gems. Other places they like for home goods and inspiration include Anthropologie, West Elm, IKEA and Target. When the Orla Kiely line for Target launched (a favorite they carry in Tigertree as well!), they scooped up as many pieces as they could and the common design elements bring cohesiveness to the rooms. They have a few special pieces of artwork from their friend, graphic designer Jon Klassen. He designed their wedding invitations and created art from it that hangs in their entry and bedroom.

    Dining After:

They recently completed a complete renovation of the kitchen. A new sink and faucet, new upper cabinets, adding an island, refacing the existing cabinets and adding a tile backsplash kept them busy for months. With some help from family, they did all of the work themselves. The kitchen has become one of Niki’s favorite things about the house.

    Kitchen After:

Currently they are in the middle of a remodel of the upstairs bathroom and hope to add a backyard privacy fence in the near future. Over the summer they rescreened and repainted the side porch. The stone arches and greenery make the porch feel like a special place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Like the Quinns’ style? In addition to the sources I listed above, the following items are available at Tigertree:

The Flock of Swallows photoclip ($22).
The Little Pig Cutting Board ($11).
And they always have an assortment of Orla Kiely goods.
