At Home: From the Short North to Olde Towne East

We recently toured Amy Neiwirth’s studio and took a look at her fantastic art collection. For the past five years, she had been living in an apartment building in the Short North. Over the summer, she decided to look around for a new apartment. Her 800 square foot, 2 bedroom apartment was feeling small. It had small closets and no where to put coats and cleaning supplies and her bike. She was running out of wall space for her art collection. It also had a lot of tenants that had louder lifestyles and Amy was ready for a change.

Olde Towne East appealed to her because she wanted a bigger place for the money – one she could move her studio for Sweet Stella into. She also wanted to find a place closer to her synagogue and also her parents who live in Bexley. Her family moved here when she was 16 when her Dad took a new job. They had previously lived in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia and she found she really enjoyed Columbus.

The Hamilton Parker Company“I love it here,” she said. “There is so much going on in the city, I can’t make it to everything I want to.”

Amy found her new 1100 square foot, 2 bedroom place while perusing Craigslist. “It looked cute from the pictures and I made an appointment to see it,” she said. She drove through the neighborhood and it had everything she wanted and more. When she took a look at the apartment, she was wondering what the catch was.

The place has loads of character and lots of storage. She’s on the second and third floors and the ceilings are high throughout. The rooms are large and the living room has a beautiful bay window, as did her apartment in the Short North. The windows let lots of light into the place. Downstairs, there are pretty wood floors and the same black and white tile in the kitchen that she had in the Short North. The upstairs are nicely carpeted. One of the best features is a washer/dryer in her upstairs bedroom. The second bedroom is where she does her work for Sweet Stella Designs. She also enjoys that this place has a shared yard space.

Amy has created different moods in each of her living spaces using art and color. Her love of mid-century modern style is apparent throughout the space. She had a specific vision of a mid-century modern shelf and dresser that she wanted. After keeping an eye on the inventory at Eclectiques Antique Mall, the bedroom dresser and bookcase she had in mind came and she had them delivered to her.

The red vinyl dinette set was from a friend. It originally belonged to her friend’s grandparents and she no longer wanted in. Amy gladly gave the set a new home!

Some of the places she enjoys finding furnishings include: Funky and Functional, Flower Child, The Boomerang Room, Eclectiques Antique Mall, Craigslist, reVue, and Crate and Barrel. Her studio tables are from IKEA. She finds many of her decorative touches either locally or through Etsy.com. She also as a few colorful mementos from Ecuador.

Although she does miss living in the Short North at times, and the ability to easily walk to The North Market was a great amenity, she enjoys her new neighborhood. She likes what is happening on Oak St. and Parsons Ave. Black Creek Bistro, CS Gallery, The Angry Baker, and Carabar have become some of her new favorite haunts.
