At Home: Beautiful gardens in Beechwold

Michael Hogan has done an amazing job putting style and beauty into his 1200 square foot Cape Cod home in Beechwold. He had been living in German Village when he decided he was ready to buy a home. “I was looking for a bigger house and wanted a yard,” he says. The 3 bedroom and 1 bath house he found eight years ago in Beechwold already had a lot of the major things done, allowing him to put his own taste into the house.

One of the first things he did was take out all of the carpet and expose the hardwood floors original to the home built in 1956. He also added curtains and setup one of the bedrooms as a gorgeous dining room. Hogan built a buffet cabinet himself, taking an old cabinet and adding turned feet, crown moulding, drawer pulls, and carved wooden designs on the panels.

Homeport“I find a lot of inspiration from Martha Stewart,” he says. Finding new ways to think about design and doing things is his passion. His Christmas tree was featured on MarthaStewart.com and he’s gotten some other press for his place – being featured on HGTV’s ‘What You Get for the Money’ and Woman’s Day ‘Budget Decorating’ and ‘Gardening and Deck Design‘ as well as several others.

At first, Hogan had his kitchen done in a retro style. Recently though, he completed a six month renovation to take it to a classy minimalist style – adding black granite, countertops, white marble floors, more cabinetry, a showpiece chandelier and some commercial stands that provide more storage and an island.

There’s another showpiece chandelier in his bathroom, that he also recently completed a remodel of.

“I like to take chances in decor,” says Hogan.

His living room is decorated in a traditionalist style and he finds many of the pieces he uses to decorate from antique shops. Much of the artwork adorning the walls are pieces he finds during his travels to California. He travels to the Central Coast, Big Sur area and San Francisco and having artwork from those locations reminds him of places he’s visited.

Hogan loves coming home to Columbus. He feels it’s a great city, as well as affordable, which allows people to make a great living here. Beechwold was a desirable neighborhood for him because of its tightly knit community, desirability, and accessibility to major centers such as Easton and Polaris, as well as I-71.

The real showstopper of his home is the backyard. Hogan loves nature and always had an interest in gardening. He has done all of the landscaping himself, finding accents such as water features at Oakland Nursery. It’s a beautiful space to entertain friends, or just get lost in the beauty of nature.
