Artspace Artist Market Survey to begin March 25

Press Release wrote Artspace Artist Market Survey to begin March 25

On March 25, a national organization dedicated to creating affordable arts spaces will begin a survey of local artists to determine the parameters of an artist live/work project in Columbus.

Artspace, along with project partners the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Columbus City Council, Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s office, JPMorgan Chase and the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, will host a public event to kick off the survey from 7-8:30 p.m. on March 25 at The Ohio State University’s Urban Art Space, 50 W. Town St.

“Artists are catalysts for positive change in neighborhoods,” said Councilmember Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, chair of the Development Committee and a GCAC Board member. “This survey is another step we need to take to continue to effectively support our creative class.”

Artspace is a nonprofit property development agency for the arts based in Minneapolis whose mission is to create and manage space where artists can live, work, exhibit, perform and conduct business.

The survey, which will be conducted electronically, will take up to six months to complete and will cost $35,000. City Council will give $13,500 of the total cost, and JPMorgan Chase will give $17,500. The Columbus Downtown Development Corporation will fund the remaining $4,000. The project has gained additional support from Mayor Coleman’s office as the city plans for its bicentennial in 2012.

“Columbus is fortunate to have so many community partners coming together for the common good of building the number of live/work spaces for local artists,” said Bryan W. Knicely, GCAC President.

Once the survey is complete, Artspace will work within the community to determine a final location, size and layout for the project and to raise funds to begin construction.

To access the survey, go to www.ColumbusArtspace.org after March 25.
